about

This was one of the final songs we wrote, I believe second to the last, seen as a companion piece to track two, The Black Orca. We were way more serious at this point, and this song probably took the most structural work of any on the album. We envisioned some sort of bear god destroying the modern world and researched Native American music and Russian folk music to get ideas. Lots of sampling in this one, and grand piano added to the mix after the bass tracks were laid down. The final part of the song involves some difficult sections of gaps between drum hits combined with source recordings of old metal in a factory and a crane engine. We figured that sound really industrial and Soviet, going with the bear theme. The combined themes turned out great. The first version of it was recorded in 2011. Took a long time to find proper samples for this one, but bears were easy because they make great sounds all the time.
