The Black Orca

from Predator by Comparative Anatomy

/

about

This was one of the last songs we completed, though it's second on the album. By this point we were trying to make our sound more complex for future work, though we disbanded after completing the core recordings. The first version of this song was recorded in 2011 under the original title of "Thar She Blows." Obviously, this was keeping with the satirical nature of the band at the time, an idea which was largely scrapped for the final version. This was one of the few tracks from this album we actually played live, including a special video synced with the music, but it was the earlier version featuring extended, operatic singing that did not make the final cut, as well as entirely different bass lines for the ending segment.

This is part of the upcoming, final album by Comparative Anatomy. Comparative Anatomy was a small project by two current members of the doom band Beldam. It was conceived of as a satirical project with a focus on making songs revolving around source and field recordings of animals. The second album, to be titled Predator, was more dense and intensive. Each song took months to complete, but after the band disbanded the final tracks were left unfinished. This year, finally, they're going to be released. Work started on Comparative Anatomy's second album in 2008.
